5 Crime prevention activities

As part of the work under their jurisdiction, probation offices are engaged in (1) informing public opinion, (2) improving the social environment, and (3) supporting activities by local residents, with a view to preventing crime. In everyday terms, this involves"mini-meetings"and other meetings of residents, PR and advertising activities, environmental clean-up activities, activities for the wholesome development of young people, rehabilitation counseling, and other activities mainly implemented by the aforementioned private-sector organizations. But apart from these, the"Movement for a Brighter Society"is an event held in July every year as an organized month for reinforcement, under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice. In 1999, the 49th such event attracted a total of 4,419,269 participants all over the country, and various activities were held.
