4 Guidance and support prior to release

For inmates who are about to be released, steps are taken to ease anxiety over life following the release, to establish future prospects, and to achieve a smooth transition to social life. To this end, pre-release treatment is conducted in a planned and organized manner, using a content and method that suits the individual inmate, in order to establish motivation for reform and rehabilitation.
The length of pre-release treatment is, in principle, 2 weeks for inmates due for parole and 1 week for those whose release date is imminent on termination of their sentences. As well as giving information needed immediately for daily life after release, information on probation systems and other methods of rehabilitation, etc. , guidance and support is also given on matters necessary for inmates'return home and subsistence. These are implemented in cooperation with related public and private organizations as well as private sector volunteers, according to the content of the guidance.
