4 Fines

  Table II-10 shows the imposition of fines in trials of the first instance (including summary orders) in 1998.
  The number of offenders sentenced to fines of less than 50,000 yen accounted for 26.5% and those sentenced to fines of less than 100,000 yen for 87.1% of the total. Of these, 98.8% were for road traffic violations. Meanwhile, the number of offenders sentenced to fines of 200,000 yen or more accounted for 5.6% of the total, and 74.6% of these were for professional negligence.
  Viewing the state of imposition of fines by type of offense, road traffic violations accounted for 88.4% of the total, followed by professional negligence with 7.7% and bodily injury with 0.8%.
